The church was constructed about 1254 on the site of one already in existence dedicated to St. Mark. It was built to show the Venetians Milan’s appreciation for having rebuilt their city after Barbarossa destroyed it.

Among those who faithfully worshipped there were the very young Martin Luther, Mozart, Catalani and Parini. On the walls are precious frescos One which was discovered just recently has been attributed to Leonardo da Vinci’s School – a Madonna holding the Child and blessing baby St. John.
