Gain access to the symbol of Milan with our all-areas pass, which allows you to explore the 600-year-old cathedral and uncover its fascinating history. Learn about the role of St. Ambrose in the cathedral’s creation, and understand the importance of the Duomo throughout the city’s spiritual and cultural development.
Climb to the Duomo Terraces, constructed using Candoglia marble, and marvel at panoramic views of Milan. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the Alps and the Apennine Mountains. An elevator option is available for those who prefer a more leisurely ascent (not included in the ticket price).
The Breathtaking Rooftop of the Duomo
A visit to the Milan Duomo would be incomplete without experiencing the charm of its rooftop. With two separate tickets for foot and lift access, the rooftop is a culmination of the cathedral’s grandeur. For those able to climb the 251 steps, a breathtaking panorama of Milan awaits, offering views of the Galleria dome and the Porta Nuova skyscrapers framed by spires.
The rooftop also offers a close view of the Madonnina, a 4-meter high, gilded copper statue of the Virgin Mary. Standing at a height of 108 meters on the Duomo’s highest spire, the Madonnina has become an emblem of the city of Milan. Its historical significance is marked by a longstanding tradition where a replica of the Madonnina is placed atop the tallest building in Milan. Currently, replicas adorn the top of the Pirelli, Unicredit, and Arcelor Mittal buildings.
Discover the Duomo Museum and the Church of St. Gottardo in Corte
Immerse yourself in the history of the cathedral at the Duomo Museum, where you can admire the 14th-century Palazzo Reale’s stained glass windows, tapestries, and sculptures. Explore the museum’s 27 halls, each filled with sacred relics and liturgical objects that reflect the cathedral’s rich past.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Church of St. Gottardo in Corte, an architectural gem that adds another layer of historical depth to your experience.
A Journey Through History at the Duomo Museum
For those interested in the cathedral’s construction history, the Duomo Museum is an enlightening visit. Housing 26 exhibition rooms, the museum displays a variety of artefacts, including tapestries, statues, liturgical objects, and altarpieces, all belonging to the Veneranda Fabbrica, the organization overseeing the Duomo’s construction and maintenance.
Exhibits are organized chronologically, allowing visitors a temporal journey through the Duomo’s history, starting from its inception to the present day. They reflect the artistic expressions and architectural styles that contribute to the cathedral’s unique character.
The Archaeological Wonders Beneath the Duomo
The site of the Milan Duomo wasn’t always an empty space. Prior to 1386, it housed churches and other buildings that were demolished to make room for the cathedral. The remains of these structures can be viewed in the archaeological complex below the cathedral.
Visitors to the Duomo Archaeological Area can see the remnants of Santa Tecla Church and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, along with two early Christian baptisteries, boasting preserved fonts and mosaic fragments.
