Embark on a breath-taking day-long trip from the cosmopolitan city of Milan to the enchanting Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the northwestern region of Italy. Comprising the five awe-inspiring villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso, Cinque Terre delivers an unforgettable experience of Italy’s breathtaking coastline and vibrant culture.
Unveiling the Marvelous Cinque Terre
Welcome to the captivating Cinque Terre or ‘five lands’. Picture yourself basking in the golden sunshine, savouring the crisp, salty sea air, and letting your eyes feast on a myriad of pastel-coloured houses scattered along the hillside against the striking backdrop of the Ligurian Sea. From May onwards, this picturesque scene comes to life, sweeping you away in a dream-like euphoria.
We’ll depart Milan by a comfortable coach and steer directly towards Monterosso al Mare, the most populous of the Cinque Terre’s five villages. Celebrated for its refreshing absence of vehicular traffic, Monterosso retains its authentic Italian Riviera spirit.
Exploring Monterosso al Mare: The Historical Grandeur
Discover the rich history of Monterosso, evident in the remnants of medieval fortifications, and soak in the serene aura of the old village. Don’t miss the monumental statue of Neptune, a testament to early 20th-century craftsmanship by Arrigo Minerbi and Francesco Levacher.
As the largest of the quintet that forms Cinque Terre, Monterosso al Mare, often simply referred to as Monterosso, emanates an air of timeless charm. With historical traces dating back to 1200, this quaint village is the only one among the Cinque Terre boasting a wide sandy beach, dotted with pubs and ice-cream shops, offering a true Italian riviera experience.
Monterosso is bifurcated into two distinct parts by a hundred-meter tunnel on a promontory. On one side lies Fegina, the residential and railway station area, and on the other, the old port, brimming with historical essence and the landing dock for boats.
Fegina, the modern part of the village, holds many tourist residential structures, a sprawling beach, and an impressive 14-meter tall statue, ‘Il Gigante’, a representation of the god Neptune. The old port, the historical nucleus of Monterosso, teems with restaurants, souvenir shops, ceramics, and handcrafted products, complemented by the characteristic narrow Ligurian alleys, known as “caruggi”.
